Food Court in a Container

The food court opens straight onto the mall atrium: tiled floor, hard painted walls, a row of stalls down one side. People move through it all day and it fills at every lunch hour, so nothing in the room ever gets a rest.

The whole seating floor is ours, made start to finish in Thailand — dining tables and chairs with backs, benches, high tables and the tall stools along the walkway. Every piece was wrapped one at a time and stacked into a container until it was full. That is why each one had to be genuinely finished before it left the workshop: once the container doors close, nothing can be adjusted until it lands in another country.

Seating here sits at three different heights — benches and ordinary chairs, then high tables and tall stools — and it all speaks one language because it is the same frame scaled up and down. Square section, square corners, and a low rail floating the same distance clear of the floor. The tops are joined boards, so a single top carries a darker plank next to a lighter one. Across the whole hall it reads as one set in several sizes, rather than furniture from separate batches that happen to be a similar colour.

Public seating belongs to nobody. Chairs get dragged across tile hundreds of times a day, tables get wiped every time someone leaves, and nobody lifts anything to spare it. What solid reclaimed teak gives you in a room like that is that the marks land in the wood itself, not in a surface layer that will eventually lift.
