Everything Under the Tabletop

The dining room was already full before the table arrived: framed pictures covering the wall, a glass cabinet of collected things, a few plants, two pendant lamps hanging over the middle, heavy grey curtains down to the floor. The tiles are polished enough to reflect all of it back, and no two chairs around the table are the same.

Our work in this house is the base, not the top. The top was already in the house, and the drawing came from the owners; what we did was build that base in reclaimed teak so it would carry the top they had. Its length was set by something that existed before us rather than by us. The frame stops the same distance in from every edge of the top, and all four legs are pulled well in from the corners, so anyone sitting at the end still has somewhere to put their knees.

The problem with a piece like this is not matching a set. It is making something new read as one table with a top it never came with. So the base stays as light as it can while still carrying the weight: legs tapering towards the floor, a central spine breaking into arms that finish at the head of each leg, every edge eased so no sharp line cuts the shadow under the top. From a seat you see only a few thin lines beneath a slab of wood. In a room where every chair is a different design, the table is not there to join a set. It is there to be the quietest thing in the room.

A dining table is handled harder than anything else in a house. Chairs are dragged in and out several times a day, the legs are kicked, caught by the mop, knocked by the vacuum every week. Sun from the glass door reaches them for part of the day. And the whole weight of the top rests on a handful of joints in this frame, all the time. It is the part almost nobody bends down to look at, and the part that finishes the table if it is wrong.
