The unit was handed over bare: white walls, pale laminate floor, the developer kitchen along one end of the living room. The bedroom is a few steps wider than the mattress and still has to hold the clothes. The laundry corner is a slot beside the door with barely room for anything but the machine.
Every piece of furniture in the unit is our reclaimed teak. The bed and headboard, the nightstand, the wardrobe and its hanging rail, the dining table and bench, the shoe cabinet at the entrance, the desk and chair, and the shelf above the washing machine. The kitchen, the floor and the door frames came with the building. The nightstand was cut to the real gap between the bed and the curtain, so it is narrower than a nightstand usually is, and it is left open at the height of the wall socket, which means a charger reaches the plug without pulling the cabinet away. The wall left beside the wardrobe was too narrow for a second cabinet, so it became hanging space instead.
The pieces stand in different rooms and do different jobs, and they still read as one set, because not one of them carries a metal pull. The drawer in the nightstand and the drawer in the desk open by a slot cut into the wood, and the wardrobe and the shoe cabinet show no handle at all. What is left on every face is grain and the shadow of an edge eased the same way, every top a glued-up teak panel, every piece the same tone of reclaimed teak. Furniture that arrived on different days does not look bought on different days.
A condo is lived in closer than a house. Everything is handled and squeezed past daily, air-conditioned dry all day and then opened to humid air at the door. And one day the people move. Almost nothing here is fixed to a wall, apart from the laundry shelf, so the whole set can be lifted out and stood up again in the next unit, which built-in work never can. The teak spent decades in this climate before it was ever furniture, and it can take a few more moves.
